Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world. It is a holistic system of medicine based on an energetic model rather than the biochemical model of Western medicine.
To treat or prevent a disease, the holistic approach of acupuncture looks at a person as a whole, analyzes her/his physical, nutritional, environmental, emotional, and social wellbeing. All symptoms are, therefore, diagnosed in relation to the whole body and a customized treatment is provided to target the root cause (s) of the illness.
The modern scientific explanation for acupuncture is largely based on research that examines brain activity pre and post acupuncture treatment. This research shows that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous and endocrine systems to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones via the endocrine system which influence the body’s own internal regulating system. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.
The needles we use are hair-thin and are designed to not cut the skin. Each needle comes individually pre-packaged in a sterile wrapper and is disposed of after use, so there is no risk of infection. They are inserted gently and shallowly and the experience of having acupuncture is in no way like having an injection. While each person experiences acupuncture differently, most people feel only a minimal amount of sensation as the needles are inserted. Once the needles are in, most of our patients tell us that they experience a feeling of relaxation and well-being.
